What is a Therapeutic Community (TC)
A supportive environment where men and women live and work together in order to explore and change problem behaviours related to their addiction.
Community as Method
Where the community is the antagonist, the facilitator of change rather than any one individual or counsellor.
A total living/learning experience
Where all behaviour is viewed as important and open to inquiry.
Small therapy groups provide the safe space to develop insight into attitudes and feelings which trigger problem behaviour patterns.
Residents are set individual therapy targets and work on these with the help of their peer group offering each other support and feedback.
Community meetings address community problems, needs and provide a forum where residents and staff take responsibility for actions affecting the community, solve conflict without violence and share positively decision-making.
A therapeutic community recovery model helps to reduce drug and alcohol relapse and re-offending.
